In an argumentative essay, there is information and argument with supporting and opposing ideas for the basic argument at hand. While writing the argumentative essay, one must clearly take their stand and write the essay as if they are persuading the opposite audience for adopting their new beliefs. The main objective of argumentative essay is to change the belief system of people, which many of them are not willing to change. The function of an argumentative essay is to hold up your theory, opinion and hypothesis about some phenomenon, which according to you is correct and truthful. The art of argumentation is a difficult skill to acquire. Many people think that it is very easy to argue and express their opinion, but they forget that people do not always agree with you. Argumentative writing is an act where you form reasons, make some inductions, draw conclusions and apply them to your case of discussion.
In an argumentative essay, it is not necessary to prove your entire point; one has to only convince their readers that your argument has a point and it is more accurate than the other competing arguments. An argumentative essay usually has a fixed format:
- Start the essay with a statement of assertion, its timeliness and significance with the phenomenon.
- Always critically review the literature about the phenomenon.
- Show how your assertion is better than the other arguments.
Writing an argumentative essay is not very difficult. Here are some easy steps on how to write an argumentative essay.

- If you want your argumentative essay to be effective, you should make sure that it has certain elements. For this reason, before you start writing, you should plan your argumentative essay well.
- Look for a good topic, you must find a topic that will have a two different conflicting point of view or two different types of conclusions. When you are looking for the topic, make sure you find a topic that is of your interest. It is very important that you have some interest in your topic. The next thing that you have to decide is that how you will back up your essay with reasoning.
- When you are exploring the topics, try to make a mental note of all the points that you can use as evidence for the issue.
- Once you have chosen the topic of your interest, make a list of all the points for both the sides of the argument. One of the first things in your essay should be presenting both sides of the issue with an assessment. Always remember to conclude with only one side.
- In arguments, except for the art of arguing you should also have proofs to support your claim. Make sure that you do not get emotional while arguing.
- Without creating too much of a drama, you will have to give the evidence. You will have to explore both sides of the topic in detail and explain why one side is better than the other.
- Once you have made a strong foundation for your essay then you can start writing it. Your essay should consist of three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. Depending on your topic, the length of these three paragraphs will vary.
- In the first paragraph, you should give a brief explanation about the topic, with some background information and then a thesis statement. In argumentative essay, your thesis will be a statement of your position on a particular controversial topic.
- The body of the essay will have the best part of the argument. You will have to go into the details of both the sides of argument and then mention the strongest point.
- Once you have described the other side, you will be presenting your viewpoint and give some evidence to explain why your position is the correct one.
- Choose the strongest evidence and then present your points one by one. Use a variety of evidence like statistics, anecdotal stories and some examples. The main body of your essay should be more descriptive as compared to the first and the last paragraph.
In the summary paragraph, restate your point as the most sensible one.
