Using a canoe, you can explore the rivers and sea in your area. You have many options for this. You can buy a canoe or rent one, but if you are too adventurous, or would like to add your touch to this adventurous sport, then you can build your own canoe. For this, you must know how to build a canoe.

You can build canoe with wood or fiberglass. Wood canoes are however more popular. Canoes are made out of soft wood and hardwood. Hardwood canoes are more preferable as these last long, and need little maintenance. Besides, you have an option from fiberglass and wood.

Choosing the material for your canoe:

  • If you wish to make a cost effective and maintenance free canoe, opt for canvas and wood. If you need a stylish and sleek boat, use fiberglass.
  • Fiberglass canoe can be made if you have a mold for your canoe, or if you get readymade molded, and cut fiberglass. You get it readymade and you just need to fit the different parts together using bolts and screws.
  • Also, while making a canoe out of fiberglass you need to make sure that the fiber particles do not enter your respiratory system. Cover your eyes and nose with a mask.  It is compulsory to use a mask while making a canoe of fiber, but it is advisable to use one while making a canoe of wood.

How to build a canoe?

  • Before buying any raw material or equipments, buy a canoe building manual and get a blueprint of canoe. This will help you clarify your concept, and help you decide on choosing materials and equipments.
  • Do not start directly. First list down all the materials and equipments, draw a blueprint of the canoe or get one. Prepare a workplace where you can work on your canoe.
  • Get all the materials, cross check with the list you had prepared.
  • You can get some good canoe designs available online. Print one and work towards it.
  • Collect all the material at your workplace. Wear your gloves, cap and goggles to avoid any injuries while working.
  • Use thick plywood to make your canoe. Very thin canoe will not be durable. Using a ply marker, scales and measuring tape, follow the blue print instructions, and mark it accordingly on your ply.
  • First, take two ply sheets with a length of 1 foot and width of at least 8 feet. The canoe will have a base and two walls or sides. The sides should be equal. So place these two plywood sheets on one another, and then mark the measurements and design of the canoe.
  • Then, from another plywood sheet, draw the base of your canoe.
  • Once the design is drawn, cross-check it once again with your blueprint.
  • Start cutting the ply with a saw, and cut various parts of the canoe from the ply.
  • Using drills, screws and nails, join the various parts of the canoe. Cut two long pieces of plywood. Fit this on the base of your canoe to make a cross. This will strengthen the base of your canoe.
  • Smoothen the edges of the canoe. This will prevent your canoe from hurting, while you touch the canoe.
  • On the base of the canoe, fit the seat. Use varnish to give a final touch to your canoe. Varnish is like paint, and it will also prevent your canoe from getting spoilt in water.
  • On one end of the canoe, you can make a small box. This box will be in Vshape as it will be at the extreme end of the canoe. This will be useful to place your life jacket or any other equipment you need in a canoe.
  • Finally buy a set of paddles, or if you wish you can again make one using a manual and blueprint.
  • Check your canoe one last time before you take into waters. Once everything is fine, you can now use your canoe

How to Adjust Valves

Usually in all cars, the valve needs to be adjusted as a part of regular servicing of the car. If the valves of the car are not adjusted properly, it might stop the car engine’s function, or else the car won’t run smoothly. The details of adjustment of the valve are mentioned on the sticker inside the engine bay. Alternatively, you can refer to the car manual to find out the same. To know how to adjust valves, read the instructions given below.

You will need some equipments to adjust the valves of the car such as:

  • Wrenches – open ended
  • Feeler gauges
  • Ratchet & Socket set
  • Flat-head screwdriver

How to adjust valves?

  • Detach the spark plug wires, the cover of the timing chain and the valve. Once these covers and wires are removed, you can see some marks over the camshaft sprocket. These are timing marks.
  • Using the half inch socket over the crank bolt, rotate the engine, such that piston number one stays at TDC – top dead center. To check the position of the piston on TDC, remove spark plug number one. Slowly turn the crank and while doing this, insert the longest screwdriver in the hole of the spark plug.
  • The ‘top dead center’ or TDC is the point at which the screwdriver stands high, just before the piston starts going down. When it is at TDC, the camshaft pulley should be straight and the timing marks should be aligned with the TDC marks. You can use a flash torch to check the position exactly.
  • Start with cylinder number one, and check it for valve clearance. There is a lock nut holding the adjuster at its position. Loosen this nut, choose a proper thick feeler gauge between the clearance adjuster and the valve stem.
  • Using a flat head screwdriver, settle the adjuster at a proper place, by inserting the screwdriver in the slot of this adjuster, and with the other hand using a wrench, fit the lock nut tightly again.
  • When the clearance is perfect, the feeler gauge can be removed easily, but the resistance is felt while pulling the gauge out. If the gauge cannot be removed, the setting is not correct, and very tight. The exhaust and intake valves’ settings vary, and your user manual will give you the details about these settings.
  • Now check the valves at the third position. The Crankshaft here has to be rotated 180 degrees to the left, or anticlockwise. Turn the camshaft by a quarter turn. There is an ‘UP’ mark seen over the pulley of the camshaft, which points at the motor’s exhaust side. Again here, check the exhaust, and intake clearance of the valves as mentioned above.
  • Now move on to the valves at the fourth position. Again the crankshaft has to be turned anticlockwise by half turn and camshaft by quarter turn. This time the ‘UP’ mark seen on the camshaft pulley will point down. Again check the clearance of valves as mentioned above.
  • Lastly, check the valves at the second position. Again rotate crankshaft anticlockwise by half turn and camshaft by quarter turn. This time the ‘UP’ mark will point towards the ‘intake’ of motor. Check the valve clearances in similar manner.
  • Once the valves’ clearances are checked, replace the cover and wires as they were positioned.

The procedure is tough; however, if you have some knowledge about the parts of the engine and have had an experience at this, it will be simple for you. If you are doing it for the first time, ask someone who has experience at this, to help you with it. Knowing how to adjust valves is good because you need to make these adjustments from time to time, and will not have to depend on your mechanic to sort it out.

How to Adjust Truss Rod

The most difficult and sensitive part of the guitar that has to be adjusted is the truss rod. To play good tunes on your guitar, you need to adjust these truss rods at regular intervals. Truss rods are not present in some old or classic models of guitars. Most of the guitars otherwise have these truss rods. However, if you do not adjust it properly, it might lead to string buzz and neck bow. It might also damage the body and the neck of the guitar permanently. If the truss rod of the guitar has to be adjusted for avoiding fret buzz or lowering the action of the string, you must know and be very familiar with the guitar. If you are new to using guitar and have no experience or idea about adjusting the truss rods, it is advisable to get it checked by an expert. However, you can learn how to adjust truss rod of guitars and adjust your guitar rods but before that, have a look at the user manual provided to you with your guitar. Some guitars have different adjustments and settings of the truss rods. Also, the user manual will help you get familiar with the truss rod components.

How to adjust truss rod?

  • Using the user’s manual, locate the adjustment screw given on your guitar’s truss rod. In most of the acoustic guitars, this adjustment screw is at the front side of the sound hole inside the guitar body. In electric guitars, the rod is below the protective plate on the headstock. You might need to remove this plate to access the adjustment screw of the truss rod.
  • Fit in the wrench in the slot of the screw and check whether the screw if fit properly. Let the wrench be in this slot till you are done with the adjustment of this truss rod.
  • Next step is checking the neck bow of the guitar. Check if this neck bow is curved or aligned to the bridge or if it is aligned away from your guitar strings. A slight bow of the neck inwards to the bridge is a must, however too much bow is incorrect.
  • Now turn the screw of the truss rod, by just a quarter turn. This will adjust the alignment of the bow. If the bow of the neck is inwards to the bridge of the guitar, turn this screw in clockwise direction. If the bow is outwards, turn the screw anticlockwise to loosen the rod.
  • Do not turn the screw more than a quarter turn at once. Turning it more will damage your guitar.
  • After turning the screw as per the requirement, get the wrench out from the slot. Try playing tunes on the guitar for at least a day. Playing the guitar will help the neck bow to settle down.
  • Next day again, check the alignment of the neck bow, and if necessary, again repeat the steps given above to adjust its bow.

The adjustment of truss rods is simple but you need to understand your guitar and components of your guitar well. You must understand the difference in the guitar tunes with the adjustments you made. If you are not able to make out the difference, or understand about the curve of the neck bow, take an expert’s help in adjusting the truss rod. Alternatively, you can even take it to a specialist in guitar repair. Adjusting the rod, yourself once or twice will help you understand the procedure. Just remember not to turn the screw more than a quarter turn.

How to Adjust Timing Belt

Timing Belt is a part of the engine of a vehicle. It is also known as the timing chain or cam belt. It runs over the engine, and it is because of this belt that the valves of the engine work in coordination. The mechanism of this chain is very simple, but its functioning is very critical, and usually you need the help of an expert to adjust the timing belt. How to adjust timing belt?

  • Station your car in a garage or place where you can work with your vehicle safely. Keep your tool box handy before you start with any adjustments.
  • Open the hood by popping the latch, and keep it safely using your locking rod. Disconnect the battery of your car.
  • Locate the timing belt in you car. Also check out the apparatus related to your timing belt. You vehicle manual might be of help to you to locate the timing belt. It will let you know where exactly the timing belt is located in your vehicle engine, and how you can find it.
  • Once you locate the timing belt, remove the timing belt cover.
  • Relax the tensioner of the timing belt. There are bolts that hold the tensioner to the belt. Unscrew the bolts and let the tensioner come in easy contact with the belt.
  • If the course of your timing belt is not functioning properly, you need to adjust it. You can again take help from the service manual of your vehicle.
  • There are timing marks on the crank, sprockets and the cam. Compare these timing marks and check the course of your belt. All these marks need to be aligned, to let your belt be in the right course.
  • Using a wrench, you can turn the engine on, by manipulating the crankshaft pulley. This will help you check the fitting of the timing belt. Let the engine complete some revolutions, to see the seating of your timing belt.
  • Check if there is any resistance in the timing belt. Also, check for any kind of friction between valves, pistons and the timing belt. Let the belt complete a few cycles, and if you find any resistance or friction, it means that the belt is not fit properly.
  • Tighten the bolts that you loosened, to relax the tensioner. Do not over tighten the bolts, just stop when the bolt stops turning at the first point. If you over tighten the bolts, next time when you will have to adjust it, it will become more difficult for you.
  • Connect the car battery, place the hood back in to the right position, and lock it.
  • Now turn on the engine of your vehicle to finally check the functioning.

It sounds difficult but is simple, isn’t it? However, you might find it difficult to adjust it in the first time, but once you get used to it, it will be child’s play for you. How to Adjust Drum Brakes

Drum brake is not much in use in the modern day vehicles. The braking capacity of these brakes is only around 25% in the vehicles in which it is used. Most of the vehicles now have ‘four-wheel disc brakes’. Some of the vintage cars had the ‘four-wheel drum brakes’, but the drum brakes were not as responsive as the disc brakes. As it controls only around 25 percent braking capacity, the disc brakes at the front, control and are responsible for the braking. However, if these disc brakes do not respond, the drum brakes compensate for their action and help control the bike. If the braking is completely dependent on the front brakes, then the disc brakes spoil easily. The rear drum brakes if kept in good working condition, it will not overload the front disc brakes. You must thus know how to adjust drum brakes so that the braking system is balanced and the front brakes do not wear out fast.

How to adjust drum brakes?

  • To start with this procedure, you will first have to detach your vehicle’s rear wheels hub cap. Loosen the lug nuts using a lug wrench.
  • Using a floor jack, lift the rear portion of your vehicle upwards and let it stay in the same position using the car jack stand.
  • Detach the car wheels by removing the car nuts.
  • After removing the wheels, look for the car’s adjusting porthole. It is located on the rear side of the car’s backing plate. A rubber plug caps the porthole as a protective cap and saves it from all foreign elements. Using a screwdriver, pry the plug outwards and remove it.
  • Using the long screwdriver, you need to locate the ‘adjusting retainer clip’ by inserting the screwdriver in the porthole. You can also use a flashlight while you go beneath the car, to locate the retainer clip. The clip looks like a tiny lever holding the car’s star wheel at the right position. Depress the clip in the opposite direction from the wheel with a screwdriver, and using an adjuster for brake spoon, start turning this star wheel in the opposite direction.
  • Next, start spinning the drum with your hand. As you spin this drum, the brake tension increases and you are just adjusting it the right way. If the brake tension decreases and the drum starts spinning freely, you are not adjusting but un-adjusting the brake. For this, you will have to again go back to the car’s star wheel, and using a spoon, turn the wheel in opposite direction.
  • While making these adjustments, occasionally pull the car’s parking cable located near the hind side of the car’s backing plate, and try moving it towards the center of the brake shoes.
  • While adjusting the brake shoes, keep checking the tension on the brake shoes as compared to the drum. To check this you can spin the drum and check for the tension. While spinning the drum, it should move, but you should feel  that the drum is being dragged away from the brake shoes touching the inner diameter of this drum
  • To stop the drum from completing one full revolution by itself, adjust the shoe brake upwards.
  • When you are done with one side, repeat it again for the other side as well.
  • After this, get inside your car and simultaneously apply the parking brake and brake pedal. This will lead to integrated mechanism of the parking brake.
  • Next step is applying the parking brake and letting it go, still on the same position. At the same time, check the position of the rear drums. If one drum is holding rightly and the other drum is not, then look for the parking brake cable’s equalizer. Adjusting this equalizer will hold the drums in positions. This equalizer adjustment is given in the user’s manual of your car, and you have to adjust it accordingly.
  • Next will be pumping the brake pedal foot and applying parking brake again simultaneously. While doing this adjust the equalizer if needed.
  • After the tension on the brakes is correct and the holding is right, place the car’s porthole plug back and replace the car wheels. Tighten the lug nuts. Check all the wheel lug nuts before taking your car for a test drive.
  • It is mandatory that you test drive your vehicle once you are done with these adjustments.

Do not directly take your car on road. It might lead to a fatal accident if any of the part is not placed properly. A test drive is must to check the functioning.

How to Adjust a Carburetor

The functioning of your car depends heavily on the carburetor. It is a vital part of your engine. It mixes the gas and air together, and helps in the car’s combustion process. The carburetor functioning is affected when its parts get damaged or contaminated. The filth from the environment such as grass, twigs, mud etc. contaminate the carburetor parts. The carburetor thus has to be regularly cleaned, and properly adjusted so that the engine of the car functions properly. For this, it is not necessary to take your car to the garage, or get it cleaned and adjusted by some mechanic. You can adjust and clean the carburetor yourself if you know how to adjust a carburetor.

There are basically two adjustments to the carburetor. One is adjusting the mixture and the idle speed of the carburetor, and the other is adjusting the choke leakage of the carburetor. You can make both these adjustments yourself with reference to carburetor adjustment given below.

How to adjust a carburetor?  - Mixture and Idle Speed

  • Switch off the engine of your car and open the car hood.
  • When you open the car hood, you can see one filter. Remove this filter and also the cartridge along with it.
  • You can then see an ‘idle mixture screw’. Turn this screw in clockwise direction. When the registering needle of the cartridge meets the seat, stop turning the needle. After this, again turn this screw in anticlockwise direction for 1 1/2 rotations.
  • Some vehicles have a main jet, which adjusts the carburetor. It is located at the end of the float bowl. In this case, the main jet screw has to be turned till the screw and emulsion seat meet.
  • Replace the cartridge and the air filter as it was, and restart the car engine.
  • Let the engine be turned on for some time on half throttle. Keeping it on will help raise the temperature of the engine.
  • Again, turn the ‘idle mixture screw’ in clockwise direction once when the engine slows down turn this  back by half, turn again.
  • The aluminum cylinder engines should be run at a speed of 1,750 RPM, and cast iron cylinder sleeve engine should be set at 12000 RPM.
  • If this adjustment is done, and still your car engine is not functioning well, you will have to adjust the choke linkage of your carburetor. It is better to make this adjustment and check the choke linkage regularly to ensure that the car engine functions smoothly.

Adjusting the Choke Linkage of the carburetor:

  • For adjusting the choke linkage, remove the cartridge and the filter of the car engine.
  • Locate the engine’s choke lever. The lever will be located on the engine or in the remote speed controls.
  • As mentioned on the equipment, set it to ‘high’ or ‘fast’.
  • Next step is to check the engine’s mounting brackets that hold the cable casing. Relax these mounting brackets, so that the cable casings move freely. Adjust these casings till the choke of the engine is closed completely.
  • After this adjustment, tighten the mounting brackets again. Check the motion of the control lever. Repeat this adjustment until you are satisfied with the settings of the choke linkage.

These settings and adjustments will help the carburetor function effectively. If you do not want to remove the carburetor and place it back, you can save on this effort by using specific products available in the market. These products are designed in a specific way, so that the carburetor can be cleaned while it is in the engine itself.

  • Jello: 6 large packets
  • Flour: 10 lbs

  • Water: as required

  • Firstly mix all the jello powder, flour- half bag and 1 gallon water.
  • Mix it well and do not let any lumps form in it. When this is mixed properly, add another 1/2 bag of flour and water
  • Keep mixing it well, and adding flour by 1/2 bag every time.
  • Add water very carefully to get the right consistency of the slime. Do not let any lumps form in the mixture, so you will have to mix it slowly and patiently
  • After getting the right consistency, mix the baby shampoo (1/2 bottle) and green food color. Color can be used as per the shade of green you want.

How to Adjust Invicta Watchband

Raphael Picard, the founder of Invicta watches, back in 1837 provided watches that are a pleasure to the owner. It is a private company and makes watches that compete with the other big brands in the market, and offer a variety, at reasonable prices. These watches are almost perfect, only for some adjustments needed with the watchband. Usually, it fits well, but sometimes you need to adjust the watchband, so that the watch stays on your wrist. Mostly the watchband never falls short, it is usually loose. You do not need to keep back the Invicta watch you chose, because it did not fit on your wrist. The watchband can be adjusted within few minutes and you can adjust the length of the watchband if you know how to adjust invicta watchband.

Adjusting the length of the watchband does not require any major tools. You need a piece of thick soft cloth, thumbtack or a tool to remove pins of the watch like small pliers, and a magnifying glass if your eyesight is weak.

How to adjust Invicta watchband?

  • To adjust the band of the watch, you will have to place it on a flat surface, where it stays still, and you can work on it; for example, a desk or table.
  • The thick soft cloth mentioned above needs to be placed on this surface. This will protect the dial and the body of the watch from any harm while you are adjusting the band.
  • You need proper illumination to work on the watchband. So either have a table lamp placed in front of the watch, or choose an area that had natural sunlight.
  • A metal pin having a spring has a clasp that holds the watchband. Remove this clasp. Using the pin remover tool, pressurize the pin of the watch that holds the clasp. The pin will not come out completely, but it will loosen to let the clasp out.
  • Now place the watch down on the cloth, with the flip side of the watch facing you. Out of all the links of the watch, some links can be removed. They have an arrow engraved on it. This arrow also indicates the direction in which the link has to be pushed, to get the link out of the band.
  • The last link from where you detached the clasp needs to be removed. Using a push pin, or the tool to remove the pins of the watch remove the pins of these links. Remove as many links you need to adjust the watch to fit on your wrist.
  • Alternatively, if you have to increase the length of the band, add more links to it and fix the links by pushing the pins inside. Gently pressurize the pin inwards to fix the links together.
  • Once the length adjustment is done, you will have to place the clasp again. Before attaching the clasp, you can place the watch on your wrist and check it for the right length.
  • Pushing the metal spring loaded pin inside, the clasp and watch links fix together.

This method is applicable to mostly all metal band watches of Invicta, as well as other brands. If the watch has a leather strap, you tighten it by piercing a hole on the strap where it fits on your wrist properly. However, in leather straps, it is not possible to loosen the watchband. You will have to get it replaced and checked, whether you get another long watchband as per the size of your wrist.

How to adjust margins in MS Word?

  • Margins allow to adjust the spacing of your content on the word document. It helps you to place the content as per the requirement of the page or print. The top, left, bottom and right margins can be adjusted in MS Word.
  • Open any word document or a new document. You can set the margins before starting the work on the word document or also after you have finished typing on the document.
  • When you open the word document, on the top left hand corner is the ‘File’ option. In this option, you get the ‘Page Setup’ option. Click on Page Setup to get the dialog box.
  • Here you can enter the exact margins you want on all sides of the page, or else even use the arrows to set the margins. For example, up arrow for upward margin.
  • The standard setting of the margin is 1 1/4 inch from sides and 1 inch from bottom and top.
  • Click ‘Apply Changes’. Check the margins by clicking on ‘Preview’.
  • If the margins look perfect, then click ‘OK’ and exit the page set up dialog box.

This will set the margins of your word document.

How to adjust margins on Excel?

MS Excel sheets printing might be a headache if the margins are not set correctly. The default margins for Excel sheet is .75 at top and bottom, and 1 inch at the sides. However, as per the size of the page you choose to print, that is A4 or A3 or any other, you will have to set the margins as per your need. The procedure is same. You can set the margins in excel using the ‘Page Set up’ option.

How to adjust margins in PowerPoint?

PowerPoint presentations look very impressive. However, the margin adjustment in PowerPoint is a bit different from the page set up in word document. The margins in PowerPoint need to be adjusted to avoid any cropping or over lapping while printing, and ensure that you print the entire slide on one page.

Procedure:

  • Open the PowerPoint application by clicking on ‘Start’ menu, followed by ‘All Programs’, ‘Microsoft Office’ and ‘Microsoft PowerPoint’.
  • On the top of the PowerPoint page, there is an option, which reads ‘Design’.
  • Under this option, you get the option ‘Page Setup’. On clicking ‘Page Setup’, you get the dialog box or window for page setup.
  • Choose the option ‘Slides Sized For’, and then the sub-option ‘Custom’.
  • Enter the margin values in the dialog box and hit ‘OK’.
  • This will set the margins as per your requirement. Opt for a Print Preview before printing the slides.

How to adjust Margins using Open Office?

  • Choose a new document in your Open Office software, which opens up a blank document.
  • Right at the top, you can see an option ‘Format’. Click on it, to get a drop down menu.
  • Choose the option ‘Page’ from this menu and a box appears on screen.
  • At the lower left side, you can see an option ‘Margins’ on the box.
  • Type in the values of margins that you want, or using the top, down, right and left arrows, adjust the margins.
  • At the end of the box, there is an ‘OK’ button, which sets the margins as required.

  • Some new models provide specific ‘level’ marked in the assembly of the headlamp, which helps you adjust the headlight of the car easily and accurately.
