How to Clean CDs

CDs are the short form of “compact disc”. It is a pre-compressed “compact disc”, which contains data. CDs are accessible to a computer for data storage and music playback. CD-ROMs are mainly used to deal with software, such as “multimedia applications” and “games”. There are some CDs which have both “computer data” and “acoustic” and are capable of being played on a CD player. Data such as “software” or “digital video” is only works on a computer which has “ISO9660” format “PC CD-ROMs”. These CDS are termed as “enhanced CDS”. The correct definition of CD-ROM is an acronym for “compact disc read only media”.

The glossy and reflective surface inside the CDs is not entrenched within the plastic disc itself, it is also connected to the back, beneath the label. If you will scrape the “label side” of disk, the “reflective surface” of disk automatically becomes useless. That’s why some brands put stickers all over the back of the disk, so that if someone tries to scratch them then the disk will get destroyed automatically in this process. You always take good care of your CDs, even though it gets scratches and become dirty. Once your CD becomes dirty, and then it won’t play properly. To clean your CDs just follow the following simple steps. It’s quite easy.

  • To remove fingerprints from the surface of CDs, take a cloth and wet it in “isopropyl alcohol” and clean the surface gently. Avoid using a “petroleum” based solvent such as “acetone”, it can damage your CD’s surface completely.
  • Dry the CD properly before putting it CD shelf or case. Wipe the disk properly with dry and clean cloths and then allow it to dry in air for about one hour.
  • Always put your CDs in the paper cover or in its CD’s case. CD’s get dirtier and even bad, scratched if you keep them uncovered, keep it in covered place.

Fixing scratches:

If there is any minute scratch at the surface of the disk, hold it up in the light to see it. If light passes through any little scratches or gaps, then the “foil layer” is spoiled and the disc is beyond repair. If it doesn’t show any light then you can decrease the impact of scratches by using a soft cloth and one of the following:

  • Spread furniture polish to disk surface, it will clear wax fills in the scratches
  • Automotive resistance compound
  • Automobile wax or polish.
