How to Restore Leather

One of the natural fabrics, which is classy as well as authentic, is leather. You can see many leather products available in market. However, you need to maintain leather goods from time to time. This is a tedious job but when you restore leather properly, it looks good. In this article you will come to know how to restore leather. Following are some of the steps involved in the process of restoration of leather:

  • Mix properly half cup of vinegar in 1 cup mink oil. The vinegar is nothing but a cleansing agent, which will help in removing all the stains and dirt on the leather. The mink oil will make the leather soft. Soft leather is more agile. Leather contains its own oil, but gradually this natural oil dries up and so it is necessary to put mink oil to gain that softness again.
  • For applying this mixture on the leather, you will need chamois. Dip the chamois into the mixture. Squeeze the chamois so that the excess solution will drip away.
  • Apply the oil and vinegar mixture evenly on the leather by using this chamois. While applying the mixture see to it that you properly apply the mixture in every inch and corner of the leather piece. This will also help to restore the color on the entire leather piece. There is no specific rubbing pattern available for applying this mixture. However, spread it evenly everywhere.
  • Now after applying the oil evenly, you will need to rub it on the leather piece. For doing this, take chamois and start rubbing it in a circular pattern.  Keep on rubbing in the same manner for at least 15 minutes. This rubbing is important so as to restore the leather properly.
  • Now take another chamois and start rubbing it again until the extra oil is removed. See to it that the oil is not dripping or the leather is not pooling in the oil.

How to Restore Leather
This is the method used for maintaining a leather piece. Leather is usually used for making leather furniture, and clothing and accessories. You also need to maintain leather accessories such as shoes, purses, jackets, etc as well. For restoring leather furniture, following steps will help you:

  • You will need a cleaner to remove all the stains. You can easily get this cleaner in a grocery shop. However, see to it that you get a cleaner, which can be used for cleaning leather. Cleaner used for leather is gentle and the cleaner used for household use is comparatively hard.
  • Take this leather cleaner and put some on a soft cloth. Now slowly rub a small area of the leather furniture.  Now leave it for a minute so that the leather will absorb the solution. Now take another towel and wipe the cleaner. This will remove the stains properly. Repeat the same step if necessary.
  • If the leather furniture has become hard, then you will need to moisturize it. For this purpose you will need a conditioner. You can use a cream to do so. Take a cotton cloth or a soft towel and rub the cream on the leather piece by using this cloth until and unless all the cream is absorbed by the leather. If there is any excess cream on the leather furniture then wipe it off. Leave the furniture for at least 2 hours before using it.
  • If you have been leather furniture for a long time, you will notice that it starts fading and the faded part doesn’t look good along with the other shiny and colorful furniture in your house. If this is the situation then you can use similar coating or a finish that matches with the rest of the furniture. If you are not sure enough regarding the finishing and touch ups, you can hire service providers that will help you to restore leather furniture in your house. You can also buy a leather restoration kit that will help you to maintain the leather furniture in your house from time to time.
