Cooking a pizza with a already made base is easy enough. But to complete the experience any cook will want to make their own pizza bases too. This article, on how to make a pizza base, is complimentary to our article on how to make pizza. With the help of these you should be able to whip up any pizza you want, whenever you want. This article will describe both ways to make a pizza base, with yeast and without yeast.

Ingredients required:

2 cups of plain flour (for making with yeast) or 2 cups of self raising flour (for without yeast)

2 teaspoon yeast, no need if you don’t plan on using yeast

1 cup milk required only for recipe without yeast

50 grams butter again required only for recipe without yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

1 tablespoon of oil (preferably olive)

salt to taste

Method One (With yeast):

Dissolve the yeast in half a cup of water and wait for about 15 minutes. Add about half a cup of flour to the water and mix till its a paste. Cover with a napkin or hankie and allow it to sit for about an hour. Mix some salt with the rest of the flour and add around a cup of water and knead the dough till its smooth and elastic. Leave the ball on a wooden surface dusted with dough to allow the dough to rise to about double its size. This should be done in a couple of hours.

Heat the oven to about 160C (only if you plan to make the pizza immediately). The oven needs to heat for about 25 minutes so meanwhile gently give shape to your pizza base dough. Start by turning the edges a little inward while giving it a circular shape. Alternatively you can shape it anyway you like. Make the base about 10 inches in diameter then sprinkle a little olive oil on top and spread it out evenly. The addition of oil makes it difficult for water content in the topping (like tomatoes) to seep into the base and make it soggy while cooking. Now your pizza base is ready to use. To store the pizza base deep freeze it, it should stay good for a couple of months at least. For using it make sure you let it return to room temperature.

Method Two (Without yeast):

Pour the flour into a mixing bowl. Apply the butter on your hands and then carefully rub it into the flour. Pour in the milk little by little and knead the dough till its smooth and elastic.

Heat the oven to about 160C (only if you plan to make the pizza immediately) and meanwhile shape your pizza base. Start at the edges and and move outward giving it a nice circular shape. Of course you can always shape it to look like anything you want. Once the base is around 10 inches in diameter sprinkle a little olive oil on top of it. Spread the olive oil evenly on the surface. This will ensure your base is safe from water in the toppings and aid cooking. Your yeast-less pizza base is now ready to use. To store the pizza base deep freeze it, it should stay good for a couple of months at least. For using it make sure you let it return to room temperature.
