Originated in the Greek world as flat round bread, pizza came to Italy in the early 18th century. Pizzas grew extremely popular among the Italian peasants as it was tasty, cheap and filling. The early pizzas did not contain any toppings till Queen Margherita developed an instant liking to it. To make pizzas, especially, special for the queen the chef decided to top it up with tomatoes, basil leaves and cheese creating the world’s first margherita pizza.
