When a tree is knocking down or cut, the remaining portion of the stem with the roots still in ground is termed as stumps or “tree stumps”. Stumps demonstrate the “age-defining” rings of the tree. The study of these “age-defining” rings is known as “Dendrochronology”. Stumps, both stumps on ground and stumps of the removed branches, are usually capable of regeneration into new trees. Usually, the deciduous tree is cut down to re-sprout in various places around the edge of the stump and from the roots. It completely depends on the tree, whether it’s been removed enduringly or it is expected to cover the forest.

Stumps, either on the removed branches or ground, are capable of regenerating new trees.

Usually, a tree which has been cut will regenerate at several places around the frame of the stump or from the roots. Tree cutting could be desirable or non-desirable, it completely depends on whether the tree is being detached eternally or the forest is expected to recover. The sprouts of stumps can grow rapidly and sometimes become practical trees itself, either for artistic or lumber, due to the existing root structure. Nevertheless, the removed portion of the stem can make the sprout week and can cause disease in the lately forming tree.

The procedure of intentionally removing stumps to renew them into smaller trees is known as “coppicing”.

Removing trees stumps from ground can be very complex. It can be dug out, ragged with a stump chopper or burnt.

The most common technique for removing stump is to use any chemical stump removal products, so long as instant results are not required. These chemical stump removers are generally made of “Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)” and act by quickly growing the decay of the stump. After a month, the stump will be decayed through and easily split into manageable pieces. If timing is the restricted factor, then you can set fire to the stump, because when the “potassium nitrate” has been engrossed it acts as a valuable oxidizer.

Earlier, a volatile called “stumping powder” was used to discharge stumps into small pieces.

Instructions:

The Stump

Start with cutting the tree down with a “hatchet” or “saw”. After that take a spade, start digging around the roots of the stumps and cutting away at the uncovered roots.

Keep Digging

Keep digging around the roots until they are exposed. You can also use a “crow bar” or large pole to dig grime from below the stump with the aim to form a hole from one end of the stump to the other.

Bind Chain around the Stump

Bind one end of chain on the stump and other end to a truck. The chain should be strong and broad enough so that it doesn’t split. Avoid using a chain from a dog leash, it will be not strong enough and will break easily.

Truck pulling Stump

Now drive the truck ahead very slowly and carefully to drag the stump out. Always remember to wear safety glasses while removing stumps so that the chip of wood don’t get in your eyes. Dragging out the stump too rapid can cause thumping around and hurting someone. The stump will be removed from tree after pulling it by truck.

Tips and Warnings

If the tree is more than three years old, then you won’t be able to take it away on your own.

You can hire a stump chopper from “Home Depot” or a “tool rental” shop.
